Skipton Castle with our children at the entrance

Class 2 had a super morning exploring Skipton Castle. What a fascinating place to explore with so many things to experience! It was amazing!

The children had a guided tour and learnt so many interesting pieces of historical information about the building and the people who have lived there over the years. The children were put in the dungeons! They visited the Great Hall ! They even shot arrows through the arrow slits and some of them sat on ‘the long drop’ !!!

It has been a wonderful day and the children were beautifully behaved and so engaged in their learning. Thank you to all who helped make this trip such a success

A Brief History of Skipton Castle, North Yorkshire

Skipton Castle, nestled in the picturesque town of Skipton in North Yorkshire, stands as a testament to centuries of history, resilience, and architectural splendour. Its origins trace back to the Norman era, making it one of the most well-preserved medieval castles in England.

The story of Skipton Castle begins in the 11th century when Robert de Romille, a Norman nobleman, was granted lands in the area by William the Conqueror. Recognising the strategic importance of the site, de Romille began construction of a wooden motte-and-bailey castle atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the town and surrounding countryside.

Over the centuries, Skipton Castle evolved and expanded, reflecting the changing fortunes and ambitions of its various owners.

In the 14th century, the castle passed into the hands of the powerful Clifford family, who transformed it into a formidable stone fortress. Under the Cliffords, Skipton Castle played a prominent role in the Wars of the Roses, serving as a stronghold for the Lancastrian cause.

Throughout its history, Skipton Castle witnessed numerous sieges, battles, and political intrigues, yet it remained a symbol of strength and resilience.

Despite enduring several periods of neglect and decay, the castle was lovingly restored in the 17th century by Lady Anne Clifford, a formidable and influential figure in her own right.  Today, Skipton Castle stands as a majestic reminder of the past, offering visitors a glimpse into medieval life and architecture. Its imposing stone walls, fortified towers, and atmospheric chambers provide a captivating backdrop for exploring the castle's rich history and heritage.

From the Great Hall with its impressive fireplace to the eerie dungeons deep beneath the ground, Skipton Castle invites visitors to step back in time and immerse themselves in the stories and legends of centuries past. Whether wandering the ramparts, admiring the views from the battlements, or delving into the castle's fascinating history, a visit to Skipton Castle is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who venture within its ancient walls. For our children in Class 2 , today,  it provided a vivid glimpse of our local history and to step into a real life Castle and to experience first hand what it may have been like to have lived there. We are so fortunate to have this amazing historical resource on our doorstep and always try to capitalise on local opportunities to bring the curriculum alive for our children!
